Madaba

Madaba Town

The town of Madaba is small, but busy, with vendors selling on the streets and a number of high end local shops selling locally made designer clothes. The town dates from the middle bronze age and is referenced in the Bible.

The ongoing construction in the area is also the primary source for new discoveries of historic artefacts. A three thousand year old Iron Age temple of the Moabites has even been found, with figurines of ancient deities.

Church of the Map

The main reason people come to Madaba are the mosaics, and the most famous of those is the map from the 6th century outlining the region, showing the cities, towns and landmarks of the area. It was discovered in 1896 and contains the earliest reference to Jerusalem as the Holy City, it shows the cardo and the Church of the Holy Sepuncha
